James Beard Award winner chef Emeril Lagasse is coming to Sonoma Wine Country May 17 and 18, and no one could be more excited about it than the management of The Healdsburg School (THS).

That’s because Lagasse is cooking a special Southern-style meal as a fundraiser for the private, independently-run K-8 school in northern Sonoma County, and then, the following evening, is helping host the Bravissimo dinner, dance and auction as another THS fundraiser at the Kendall Jackson Wine Center in Santa Rosa.

As is often the case with such celebrity appearances, guests will pay to play. The headliner dinner is a private affair for 24 guests willing and able to cough up $5,000 per person.

What the menu is, no one knows yet, but the meal will be paired with Kosta Browne wines and served at the Kosta family’s home, with Sonoma County chef Mark Stark assisting in the kitchen (Stark owns Stark Steak & Seafood, Willi’s Wine Bar, Bravas Bar de Tapas, Willi’s Seafood & Raw Bar, and Monti’s Rotisserie & Bar).

The Bravissimo gala is a bit more approachable, at $150 per person, and Lagasse and his wife Alden will also attend, so there’s good opportunity for rubber-necking at the chef, restaurateur, TV personality and author who had the whole world yelling “Bam!” for much too long after debuting The Essence of Emeril on the Food Network in 1994.

Guests wanting to sit at the Bravissimo Chef’s Table with the Big Guy himself, however, will need bigger wallets: tickets for that honor are $1,000 per person. [More...]

The second graders have been immersed in letter-writing for the past few weeks. We are currently taking part in a project called “Flat Stanley”. The basic idea of the project is to connect the students with friends and family living in other places via letter-writing. Flat Stanley is a 1964 children’s book written by Jeff Brown. It tells the story of a young boy, Stanley Lambchop, who wakes up one morning to find that a bulletin board has fallen on his bed during the middle of the night. Even though he feels okay, he discovers that he is completely flat! He then encounters several unique and humorous situations. During this project, each student created an artistic “likeness” of him/herself. The “likeness” is a small, paper person that resembles the student. The “flat students” were then mailed with accompanying letters, written by the students. Each letter asks the host to take the visitor out and about for one week, while documenting his/her travels with a journal and/or photos. In class, we have documented these travels on our maps of the United States and the World. The “flat students” are due to arrive back to THS in the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing about their adventures.

Please be sure to study your Mandarin. Here is the link to Mrs. Li’s study guide.

Here is a fun picture from our buddy work on Tuesday. Enjoy!

In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers or Fibonacci series or Fibonacci sequence are the numbers in the following integer sequence:

By definition, the first two numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are 0 and 1 (alternatively, 1 and 1), and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two.

In mathematical terms, the sequence Fn of Fibonacci numbers is defined by the recurrence relation

The Fibonacci sequence is named after Leonardo of Pisa, who was known as Fibonacci. Fibonacci’s 1202 book Liber Abaci introduced the sequence to Western European mathematics,[3]although the sequence had been described earlier in Indian mathematics.[4][5][6] (By modern convention, the sequence begins either with F0 = 0 or with F1 = 1. The Liber Abaci began the sequence with F1 = 1, without an initial 0.)

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
