Lower School at The Healdsburg School

The Healdsburg School supports an environment where children are honored, supported, and respected for their interests, capabilities, and individual potential

At The Healdsburg School (THS), we believe that young children are natural, curious, and excited learners. To capture this enthusiasm and zest for learning, and thereby fostering a love of lifelong learning, THS has designed a lower school curriculum for grades 1 to 6 that is integrated, experiential, interactive and meaningful to young learners.

With this in mind, and our commitment to excellence and best educational practices, THS has chosen to incorporate the International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Program (PYP) into the lower school curriculum. The PYP promotes a global perspective in an inquiry-based program that facilitates the acquisition of knowledge in a positive, balanced and collaborative environment.

Our enhanced curriculum will encourage the development of characteristics that provide the foundation for each student to become a life-long learner. Our remarkable, highly trained and qualified teaching staff will empower students with the skills:

To inquire, reflect, and think purposefully

To enable their own learning, thereby developing an awareness of how they learn best

To work collaboratively with others, thereby communicating effectively

To appreciate and respect diversity, thereby facilitating open-mindedness

To have a desire to contribute to their local and global community

The Lower School Program incorporates rigorous academics emphasizing a foundation of essential skills in preparation for student’s success in the Middle School Program and beyond. Thus, the curriculum includes differentiated instruction in math, science, economics, literacy development, writing, history, cultural and physical geography, Spanish, Mandarin and technology. Subjects are structured to be integrated, experiential, and collaborative across all disciplines. Student’s progress is measured and accounted for through on-going, responsive evaluation. The success of each student is provided through the attention to individual learning styles and made possible due to our small class size. Our aim is to maintain a 10:1 student:teacher ratio.

As THS is dedicated to the development of the whole child, our curriculum provides enrichment courses that are integrated with our academic program. Art, music, drama, physical education and our sports program naturally add depth and relevancy to the core curriculum.

Essential to the success of the students we serve, THS recognizes that building a strong community through parent involvement is paramount to our mutual commitment to provide our students with a world class education. We invite you to continue to explore the endless possibilities inherent in a THS education.
